Dark Sky Reserve in Central Idaho
The daytime views in Stanley, Idaho are jaw-dropping enough, but add in the night sky and the experience turns into something entirely different. When you add in the stars, the Milky Way, and almost no light pollution, the views turn into something even bigger and deeper, perhaps spiritual. In 2018, the Sawtooth Wilderness and the surrounding towns became the first dark sky reserve in North America. Here is why you absolutely have to experience earthly and heavenly wonders in Central Idaho’s Dark Sky Reserve when you stay with us at Stanley High Country Inn.
What is a dark sky reserve?
A dark sky reserve is an area with little to no light pollution that allows for unobstructed, pristine viewing of the night sky. Guidelines are published for outdoor lighting, and communities work together to ensure that lighting does not create any light pollution.
Why should you visit?
It is estimated that over ⅓ of the total world population is not able to see the Milky Way due to light pollution. Viewing the Milky Way is a truly wonderful and spiritual experience that connects us with something bigger, and joins us together as humans. When we look up at the beautiful night sky in the Sawtooths, we are left with only the most essential and beautiful parts of life.
If you haven’t spent time staring into the skies, then you are truly missing out on one of the most simple, yet beautiful parts of being human, and understanding that there are many things that we don’t know about our existence yet!
When should you visit?
The best time to visit for stargazing is on the new moon. You can easily look up the new moon schedule on a website like this one. It is also a good idea to check for meteoroid showers like the popular Perseid showers in August, and other Astro events. Some apps can even help you know when the International Space Station is passing overhead, and you can see it with the naked eye!
